sushi time in matthew 14

https://tamarachaos.blogspot.com/2023/11/sushi-time-in-matthew-14.html

Jesus heard the news of John the Baptist being beheaded and went on a boat to be alone in a remote place. But it didn't quite work out because the people found out where he was and flocked from different towns to see him.

‭‭Matthew‬ ‭14:13‭-‬14‬ ‭NLT‬‬
[13] As soon as Jesus heard the news, he left in a boat to a remote area to be alone. But the crowds heard where he was headed and followed on foot from many towns. [14] Jesus saw the huge crowd as he stepped from the boat, and he had compassion on them and healed their sick.

‭‭Matthew‬ ‭14:19‭-‬20‬ ‭NLT‬‬
[19] Then he told the people to sit down on the grass. Jesus took the five loaves and two fish, looked up toward heaven, and blessed them. Then, breaking the loaves into pieces, he gave the bread to the disciples, who distributed it to the people. [20] They all ate as much as they wanted, and afterward, the disciples picked up twelve baskets of leftovers.

Holy communion time.

I've heard this story so many times and now when I read it I realize that that the Bible never mentions that they cooked the fish, which means, they must have had it raw, however, it could also mean that God didn't think it was important enough to mention. I suppose explaining the whole process of cleaning a fish would take away from the grand message of the parable.

What an amazing miracle this was. With 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish, Jesus and his disciples who were with Him were able to feed 5,000 men and the women AND the children. Jesus didn't think it was necessary to send the people home so they can eat. I think of homeless shelters. They feed the people. They take care of their needs. They don't give them a bed, they give them all their basic needs.

‭‭Matthew‬ ‭14:19‭-‬21‬ ‭NLT‬‬
[19] Then he told the people to sit down on the grass. Jesus took the five loaves and two fish, looked up toward heaven, and blessed them. Then, breaking the loaves into pieces, he gave the bread to the disciples, who distributed it to the people. [20] They all ate as much as they wanted, and afterward, the disciples picked up twelve baskets of leftovers. [21] About 5,000 men were fed that day, in addition to all the women and children!

But then it was time for the people to go home.

‭‭
Matthew‬ ‭14:22‭-‬23‬ ‭NLT‬‬
[22] Immediately after this, Jesus insisted that his disciples get back into the boat and cross to the other side of the lake, while he sent the people home. [23] After sending them home, he went up into the hills by himself to pray. Night fell while he was there alone.

It must either take a long time for the boat to cross over the water or they left late. I think they probably left late. I'm sure the events went up until 12 am, since when many people are together, they will often talk a great deal. Also, they were relishing in the teachings of Jesus.

Can you imagine going to church for hours on end? But actually, this makes me believe that it does take a long time to cross the water.

‭‭Matthew‬ ‭14:22‭-‬23‬ ‭NLT‬‬
[22] Immediately after this, Jesus insisted that his disciples get back into the boat and cross to the other side of the lake, while he sent the people home. [23] After sending them home, he went up into the hills by himself to pray. Night fell while he was there alone.

It's 3 am and the boat started to get really rocky.

‭‭Matthew‬ ‭14:24‭-‬26‬ ‭NLT‬‬
[24] Meanwhile, the disciples were in trouble far away from land, for a strong wind had risen, and they were fighting heavy waves. [25] About three o’clock in the morning Jesus came toward them, walking on the water. [26] When the disciples saw him walking on the water, they were terrified. In their fear, they cried out, “It’s a ghost!”

But Jesus assured them that He was not a ghost. He told them not to be afraid. Peter wanted a little more assurance so he asked Jesus that if he was really Jesus, could he make Peter walk on water too? Jesus assured him that he could, and Peter was walking on water, until he started to doubt! Do we do that sometimes? Trust God for a while, then start having doubts? Sometimes we might do that because Jesus isn't working as fast as we want. We might start to wonder if God is really listening.

Jesus asked Peter why he doubted Him. Then Peter and all the disciples believed that Jesus really was the Son of God.

They crossed over to the land and arrived in Genesaret. News spread of his arrival and they started flocking to Him to be healed.
